Deciding where on the island to book your hotel accommodation is an important step to a memorable holiday. Some like it secluded, peaceful and tranquil, some like the buzz of a busy holiday atmosphere and some like it somewhere in-between.

In this article we will give an abbreviated overview of the best and most popular Phuket beach destinations, what you can expect from the location and point you in the direction of some great hotels in each area.

Patong is without a doubt the centre of all activity in Phuket. It is alive with people, a congregation of restaurants, bars, pubs, shopping opportunity, water sports abound and even a large shopping mall, making it popular with those who likes an electric holiday atmosphere. A vibrant nightlife with an assortment of clubs and discotheques sees that the nocturnally inclined also have a blast of a time.

Patong is home to a large selection of hotels and sees some fine luxury accommodation options to more budget savvy and everything in-between.

If you would like to be close to all the action but not directly in it and out of earshot of any noise, try the 4 star Amari Coral Beach Resort, located in the southern most corner of Patong on its own private beach. La Flora Resort is another 5 star resident of Patong right in the centre of the beach. This stylish establishment offer accommodation for anything from single travelers to two bedroom villas for family vacationers. The brand new very hip and funky 4 star B-Lay Tong resort also needs to be mentioned. This Phuket resort is located to the upmarket northern end of Patong.

Pure white sand that glitters, Karon is the 2nd biggest of the primary Phuket tourist beaches. It is located just south, a 5 minute tuk tuk ride, from the glittering lights of Patong. Long and wide, it is debatable if Karon is not maybe the most sought after of all Phuket beaches. Many hotels line the road that runs parallel to the beach, but very little if any development has taken place on the beach. To the northern end of this beach several restaurants, bars and other commercial activity is centered. Probably the most upscale Phuket beach area, Karon is home to highly recommended hotel names the 5 star Movenpick Resort & Spa, Centara Karon Resort, Centara Villas Phuket and the Hilton Phuket Arcadia. Just recently the brand new 5 star Centara Grand Beach Resort opened its doors to the northern end of Karon. This Phuket hotel is in fact located directly on the beach and every room offers sea views.

Kata Beach is the smallest of the primary tourist beaches. White sands, crystal clear waters and Phuket hotels and resorts right on the beach. If you do not wish to have a road between your hotel and the beach, Kata is probably where you will find your choice of Phuket accommodation. All structures bordering Kata is low rise so views are unobstructed and set to stay this. A beautiful beach and area in general, Kata is a great choice, perfect for swimming and plays hosts to names like the luxury Mom Tri's Boathouse boutique hotel, Centara Kata Resort and the popular 4 star Andaman Cannacia Resort & Spa. All of which is recommended places of stay.

Surin Beach is home to several high-end 5 star hotels & resorts and is aptly referred to as millionaire's row. The beach is beautiful and the sand a fine white powder. These luxury establishments have also given rise to some top notch restaurants and wine bars. Suggest for discerning travelers, Surin will be a good choice. Names like The Surin Hotel (Formerly The Chedi Phuket Hotel) and Manathai Resort has made Surin their home.

Kamala Beach is located just north of lively Patong with its glittering lights and feverish nightlife. Kamala calls to those who like it quieter while still within easy reach of Patong. The southern end of the beach gets busier during high and peak season. Here, a range of restaurants and bars can also be found. However, simply head for the northern end all year round to find peace and quiet. Kamala is of course also home to one of the biggest Phuket attractions, The Phuket FantaSea. Kamala is home to, amongst others, the luxury Cape Sienna Hotel & Villas.

Bang Tao is an enormous 8 kilometer stretch of beach. The southern end of this beach offers a range of some nice mid range hotels while the north is occupied by the ultr luxury Laguna hotel complex. Just a little inland is a small market and the village of Cherng Talay. The predominantly Muslim community makes a living from fishing as they have been for generations. In Bang Tao you will spend most of your time on the beach, utilizing resorts facilities and activities or rent a jeep to check out neighbouring beaches. Not busy, not quiet and very little if any night life.

Mai Khao Beach is at almost 10 kilometers, the longest beach in Phuket. Situated at the northern tip of Phuket, this area has seen limited development and construction. If you don't like to share a beach with too many other tourists, Mai Khao is your place. This is an area to get away from it all and spend your time in quiet and tranquil seclusion, though the nearby location of the airport does bring some air traffic noise every now and then. Sala Phuket Resort and Spa and Anantara Phuket Resort and Spa are two quality resorts in Mai Khao that deserves a closer look. Be careful when swimming here May to October with strong under currents and a steep slope into the ocean making things hazardous.

Just south of Mai Khao is Nai Yang beach, home to the fabulous Indigo Pearl Resort. Once again, commercial development is limited. The setting is lovely and tranquil and like Mai Khao, it is removed from any major activity and Patong is an approximate 45 minute drive away. A good choice to spend a few days in blissful seclusion, recuperate and then head for a more active environment.

Well then, this should help you make a more informed decision before booking Phuket hotels. It is a very popular tourist destination and was, until quite recently, number three in the world. It probably will be again. Bangkok and Phuket are generally quite pricey and to be honest Pattaya can be too. How expensive a holiday is, is dependent on choices. The number of choices open to you is dependent on pre-planning.

Book your flight today to fly tomorrow and it will cost you an arm and a leg. Unless of course you are very very lucky and grab a fantastic last minute deal. Book two, three, four months ahead and the price will be so much lower. The further you book in advance the more airlines are available for you to make your choice from. If time is not too much of an issue you could country hop and utilise two or three airlines.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 297px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Stqv2nezxeI/AAAAAAAABS4/LrG3Ge0lmqU/s400/pattaya-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393816856575591906" />
You should where possible choose the 'off season' to visit. This again will multiply your choices of hotels and give you much better deals. There is little difference in the weather in 'high season' or 'off season' in Pattaya. There is certainly as much to do. If it does rain then the rain is usually of short duration and to be honest a bit of a relief.

Now you could book your hotel in advance and in fact I advise you do but book it for just three days even if it is your intention to stop for a few weeks. If you are in the off season there will be no problem extending your stay. On the other hand you have three days to look round and book into somewhere better. There are always fantastic deals for those who shop around. The internet is all very well but it is a maze off agents waiting to skim their little bit off the top.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 258px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Stqv6mOVptI/AAAAAAAABTA/7KMT3AU_DPI/s400/pattaya-4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393816924957550290" />
Pattaya is great for food. The International cuisine on offer is nothing short of amazing. Prices too are generally much lower than in Europe. In Europe Thai food is expensive, in Thailand it is cheap. Not just cheap but delicious. Here it is cooked by the experts and using local produce. If you are going to eat Thai food then forget the big fancy restaurants and those near the main tourist drag. Head up the side Soi's (roads) and here you will find the best of the best. You can eat very well for a dollar.

Don't use taxis to get about. The Sang Thaew or Baht Bus is very easy to use and extremely cheap. There is practically nowhere you cannot get to in the city in two or three hops. Alternatively use a 'motorci' (motorbike taxi). It will cost a fraction more but get you to wherever you are going in a trice.

Pattaya has an abundance of cinemas, bowling alleys, zoos, beaches, islands, shopping, golf, health spa's and so much more to keep anybody happy during the day. At night the city comes alive. This is the party capital of the world, and you can afford it

Ski at Sahoro

Sahoro is a popular resort with foreigners largely due to the fact that the only Club Med in Japan is situated at the base of the resort. It is located right across the street from the Fashion Design Institute of Istanbul.
Address: Tesvikiye Caddesi No. 123
The Hotel Sofa, Lobby Kati
34367 Nisantasi, Istanbul, Turkey
Ph: +90 212 224 81 81

3. Mabel Cikoclata is a chocolate store that has been around since 1947. They have such distinctive and delicious chocolates.
Address: Vali Konagi Caddesi 32/1
Nisatasi, Istanbul, Turkey
Ph: +90 212 225 27 89
mabel.com.tr

4. The fourth place will be BNG Tunel. BNG Tunel is a store for distinctive women clothing both stylish and affordable
Address: BNG Tunel
Tunel Meydani 14
Beyoglu Istanbul 34420, Turkey
Ph: +90 212 251 97 26
bng-design.com

5. Last but not least we have the Spice Bazaar. I recommend everyone to go to the Spice Bazaar rather than the Grand Bazaar. I got a little overwhelmed with the Grand Bazaar between all the junk they sell and the jewelry stores that sell all the small pieces. At the spice bazaar, the merchants let you try various kinds of candy that are called "Turkish Delight". These make a great gift for that special loved one. Also if there is a "chef" in your family the spice set will make a perfect gift. He or she will be thrilled. As far as interior design goes, the glass vases are pretty and would look great in someone's contemporary home, but with the airlines and their weight restrictions I think and recommend it would be better to ship the items home. It would be cheaper in the long run!

Soul Food - You Will Miss

While designer boutiques and cafes spring up in Seoul, I will share to you my travel experience with some sections of Seoul. This capital of South Korea offers silk worm snack foods and street jazz.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 99px; height: 74px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Sky1t7BZI_I/AAAAAAAABLo/KIaMMbC3jRM/s400/Tongdaenum.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353853857578951666" />
The place. It was a clear spring evening, outside Tongdaenum stadium, west of Seoul. Hundreds of teenagers mill around waiting for the clock to strike 8 p.m. I wonder if it is not a soccer match or a pop concert they have come to see. Their excitable chatter would lead me to believe otherwise.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 85px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Sky116bdcTI/AAAAAAAABLw/uBUrMOxzUSY/s400/Migliore.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353853994858803506" />
Oh I see! The big attraction lies across the road at the Migliore department store. A 14th floors of thrifty glamor fashions and the latest arcade dance machines. Or maybe a guest pop group appearance awaits the crowd. Migliore's night-owl business hours (8 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily) have made it a beacon for Seoul's restless and hip-to-the-groove youth. And at 8:06 p.m. the first transactions are rung though. Less than eight hours after Migliore closes its doors, another hive of shopping opportunity will abuzz on the other side of the city.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 92px; height: 130px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Sky2ADZ9ttI/AAAAAAAABL4/0DIfYpIsfR8/s400/Mount+Namsan.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353854169067140818" />
We inched our way up the base of the imposing Mount Namsan, Myong-dong district, a new face of Seoul. Here we saw sleek office complexes rise over bustling local markets, Eastern and Western fashions. Coffee is the beverage of choice.

The food. Commerce is certainly the force driving the capital these days. But I find it's worth noting about our travel to Seoul is when dinner time approaches. All our wheeling and dealing, haggling and bartering, suddenly stops. We and the citizens of Seoul get down to the very serious business of eating and drinking.

I believe that there is a growing demand for traditional home-cooked food that has created an enormous range of dining possibilities for travelers and visitors to Seoul. I find it the most challenging part of dining out in Seoul is where to pull up a seat at hundreds of food stalls, restaurants and even street kitchens.

We sit down at one of these stalls and found out our fellow diners could be a mechanic chewing thoughtfully on a pig's trotter. I saw a group of immaculately-dressed office ladies tucking into a fish head stew. I find the aromas of their dishes excite, and at the same time, completely confuse my senses. I'm still curious, odors fill the night air along the north side of Jongno Street back towards the Seoul's city center. Oh! It's peondaegi, or boiled silkworm larvae, wafting from dozens of street carts.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 85px; height: 105px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Sky2G3CejmI/AAAAAAAABMA/SOOU_tBSajM/s400/Danseonsa.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353854286006488674" />
Outside Danseonsa Theater, I spied elderly women spooning steaming critters into paper cups and selling them to passers-by for US$0.95 (1,000 won). I speared them with the toothpick provided and I swallow it as quickly as possible. It is at the back of T'apkol Park that I finally found an antidote for the powerful silkworm aftertaste. There are a handful of stores specializing in traditional medicine, called hanyak.

Clusters in the alleys to the north, are easily recognizable by the bell jars of snake wine in their windows. Together with dried reptiles, exotic-smelling herbs and animal parts, snake meat soup called paem t'ang (don't know if I spelled it correctly), and snake wine, called paem sul. At Cheung Jin Ok restaurant, opened in 1937, located in Jongno district my problem was solved. There is only one dish to choose from, hae jang or the coagulated cow's blood broth served with extra spicy kimch'i.

Did you know? Kimchi is an absolute necessity in every Korean meal and can be made from one or more kinds of vegetables including Chinese cabbage, radish by seasoning and salting them with garlic, scallion ginger, chili and fish sauce.

tour at Varanasi, India

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 106px; height: 141px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/SkWkBAGf-cI/AAAAAAAABB4/dLqZCvfyj78/s400/Varanasi,+India3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351864069313788354" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 97px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/SkWkA5PhtMI/AAAAAAAABBw/ftJcKC5c3vw/s400/Varanasi,+India2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351864067472602306" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 103px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/SkWkA3hy4iI/AAAAAAAABBo/Zd49dUfzMZk/s400/Varanasi,+India5.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351864067012354594" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 143px; height: 107px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/SkWkAqJblJI/AAAAAAAABBg/pGQ1xpUeokY/s400/Varanasi,+India7.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351864063420503186" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 127px; height: 85px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/SkWkAvlOWkI/AAAAAAAABBY/tQiVkxNd6YE/s400/Varanasi,+India6.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351864064879254082" />
The municipality is legendary because it is deemed as a sanctified area for devotees. it is also identified as the antiquated accessible municipality, and the town has served as a soundless witness to many enormous undertakings.

The name of the city has its source, perhaps from the forenames of the two streams, Varuna and Assi because of the flowing together of Varuna with the Ganges River being to its north and that of Assi and the Ganges to its south. Instead of catching a cab or hiring a guide, take this cheap and easy tourist boat along the Chao Praya River and hop off at any of the major tourist attractions. For 20baht (less than $1 USD) you can take a relaxing ride away from all of the noise and pollution of the city. For 100 baht ($3 USD), you can buy an all day pass giving you an unlimited amount of rides to hop on and off whenever you please.

Make your way to the river and you can catch this boat at any pier. Public Buses, the sky train, taxis and tuk tuks, they will know where to take you. The boats run in either direction from the Taksin Bridge to The Banglampu District near Khao San Road. Both the tourist boat and the public boat leave from these piers. If you really want to save money and travel like a local, catch the public boat for only 8 baht. It is more crowded and there are no tour guides, but it will get you to where you want to go just fine.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 140px; height: 95px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Sj4_kNANUII/AAAAAAAAA4Q/ye_Qgc4Neb0/s400/The+Chao+Praya+River+in+Bangkok3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349783298561101954" />
But if you are a first time visitor to Bangkok I recommend the tourist boat. It is quieter, the seats are comfortable and it doesn't spew exhaust that chokes you as ride along. A tour guide will talk to you about the sights on the shores and you can sit and listen all the way to the end of the line. However, you will want to jump off a lot, because this boat stops at every major tourist attraction along the river. These sights are some of the most spectacular in the city and a must for every tourist.

You can hop off at China Town, the National Museum, Temple of the Dawn, Wat Arun and Wat Pho. The Maritime Museum, the Gemstone Market, the Oriental Hotel and of course the Grand Palace, Bangkok's most popular destination.

It is an efficient and well-run system. At each pier the deck hand ties the boat up as he blows his whistle relentlessly to let the captain know what is going on. Once the boat is safely secure, you can step off onto the pier to explore the area in front of you. Once you are done, you can catch the next boat that comes by. Between the tourist boat and the local boat, you can get to your next destination in minutes. They run just like a bus or subway system. If you don't have the 1-day pass, you will have to pay again, but the price is so little, you won't feel bad, especially if you ride the local boat.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 121px; height: 93px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Sj4-MYIWJwI/AAAAAAAAA3o/0EBaIXViv4k/s400/The+Chao+Praya+River+in+Bangkok4.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349781789719537410" />
You could spend days in Bangkok and never leave the river. Every stop is either right on the rivers banks or within walking distance from the Pier. The temples are extraordinary and Wat Pho is a must see destination. The oldest temple in Bangkok, it is home to the 46 meter long reclining Buddha. Lying down, it stands 15 meters high.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 129px; height: 97px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Sj4-MVMUGBI/AAAAAAAAA3w/Kd_ZicBkIxU/s400/The+Chao+Praya+River+in+Bangkok2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349781788930873362" />
Wat Arun aka The Temple of the Dawn is majestic. It stands on the opposite side of the river from the other attractions and its tower stands proudly looking over the water. Chinatown is vibrant and exciting and you can make your way to the Temple of the Golden Buddha. A solid gold Buddha sit in its walls and it has an interesting story. For 20 years it was sitting in storage hidden within a plaster Buddha. It was discovered when a crane accidentally dropped it to reveal this great treasure that is now on display for your viewing.

Last but not least is the Grand Palace. Built in 1782 it houses the Royal Temple containing the Emerald Buddha. Walk around its beautiful grounds and take in its grandeur. This is by far the most visited temple in all of Bangkok.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 87px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Sj4-M2If_cI/AAAAAAAAA4A/gIhsq9Cma8c/s400/The+Chao+Praya+River+in+Bangkok5.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349781797773245890" />
When visiting the Wat's, make sure to dress properly. Have respect for the Buddhist culture and follow the guidelines. In places like the grand Palace, Wat Arun and Wat Pho wear a long sleeved shirt and a sarong or long skirt. Men should wear long pants and have their shoulders covered. These temples are open to the public and people pray and worship within their walls. Have respect for their beliefs and do not disrupt them.

Once you are done your day of sight seeing, you can hop back on the tourist or local boat and make your way to the Taksin Bridge where you can catch the sky train back to anywhere that you are staying in the city. Be it Siam Square, or Sukhumvit. The sky train is quick, efficient, cheap and fast.

Or better yet, hire a tuk tuk to experience a true Thailand tradition. Zip through the streets in a three-wheeler motorcar and feel the energy of the city. Barter hard however and never fall for the scam of a free or cheap 10 baht ride because they will take you to every gem market until you buy something. Once they have their commission, you may not have a lift back to your hotel.

With a good map, a guide book and a firm resolve to stick to your plans, getting around Bangkok can be a lot of fun and a few days by the river can be a rejuvenating experience.

Debra Corbeil is one half of Canada's Adventure Couple with her husband Dave Bouskill. Venice is its best-known city and one of the most popular tourist destinations on earth. But the Veneto region is a lot more than this great city. There are excellent tourist attractions elsewhere, and you won’t have to fight the huge crowds. With a little luck you’ll avoid tourist traps, and come back home with the feeling that you have truly visited Italy. This article examines tourist attractions in the Shakespearean town of Verona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Be sure to read our companion articles on northern Veneto, southern Veneto, and the university city of Padua.

Verona. I don’t know about you, but I can’t hear this word without thinking of the phrase, Two Gentlemen of Verona, a not particularly well-known Shakespeare play. Verona was the setting of a particularly well-known Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet. This city of more than a quarter million has a long and bloody history. Its residents are proud that on an Easter Monday more than two hundred years ago they drove out the French occupiers. The German writer Goethe and the French writers Stendhal and Valéry included Verona in their travel diaries. The Roman emperor Julius Caesar spent a lot of time here, and probably enjoyed many of the sights described next.

Verona has quite a collection of vestiges from its Roman days. Let’s start with its Roman amphitheatre, the third largest in Italy. This structure is approximately 400 feet (140 meters) long and 350 feet (110 meters) wide, giving it a seating capacity of about 25,000 spectators in 44 tiers of marble seats. While only fragments of the outer walls remain, its interior is virtually intact. This edifice often hosts fairs, theatre, opera and other public events, especially during the summer.

A First Century B.C. Roman theatre was eventually transformed into a housing site but in the Eighteenth Century the houses were demolished and the site restored. Nearby you’ll find the Ponte di Pietra (Stone Bridge), a Roman arch bridge crossing the Adige River, completed in 100 B.C. Retreating German troops destroyed four of the bridge arches in World War II but the bridge was rebuilt in 1957 using original materials.

You should also see the First Century Arco dei Gavi (Gavi Arch) straddling the Corso Cavour; once the main road into the city. Look for the architect’s signature, a rarity for the times. French troops destroyed this arch in 1805, and it was rebuilt only in 1932.

Porta Borsari, an archway at the end of the Corso Porta Borsari street, is the façade of a Third Century gate within the original Roman city walls. This street is lined with several Renaissance Palaces. Porta Leoni (Leoni Gate) is what remains of a First Century B.C. Roman city gate. Parts of it have been incorporated into a wall of a medieval building. Even in those days some people believed in recycling. You can see the remains of the original Roman street and the gateway foundations if you look slightly below the present street level.

The Twelfth Century Romanesque Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore is quite a masterpiece. It is built upon a Fourth Century shrine to the city’s patron saint, St. Zeno, the first Bishop of Verona. The basilica’s splendid one hundred ten foot (seventy two meter) bell tower is worthy of mention in Dante’s Divine Comedy. Both the doorway and the inner bronze door have multiple panels of biblical scenes and depictions from St. Zeno’s life. Its walls are covered with Twelfth and Fourteenth Century frescoes. Its vaulted crypt contains the tomb of St. Zeno as well as the tombs of several other saints.

The small but attractive Romanesque Twelfth Century Basilica of San Lorenzo is built on the site of a Paleo-Christian church, some fragments of which remain. The huge Eighth Century Romanesque Santa Maria Antica Church was the parish church of the Scaligieri family that ruled Verona for many centuries. Many of them are buried in the complex. Some of these tombs are quite unique and well worth seeing, even if you’re not a habitué of that sort of thing.

The Twelfth Century Romanesque Duomo (Cathedral) was constructed on the site of two Palaeo-Christian churches destroyed by an earthquake much earlier in the century. The site includes an unfinished Sixteenth Century bell tower. Be sure to see the chapel adorned with Titian’s Assumption.
Verona’s largest church is the Fifteenth Century Sant’Anastasia whose interior is considered one of northern Italy’s finest examples of Gothic architecture, and believe me this competition includes many entries. The construction of this magnificent edifice took nearly two hundred years. Among its items of honor are frescoes and hunchback statues that serve to dispense holy water. It is said that touching a hunchback’s hump brings good luck. Maybe next time.

San Fermo Maggiore is in reality two churches. The tomblike lower Romanesque church dates from the Eighth Century. The huge Fourteenth Century Gothic upper church is notable for its ceiling festooned with the paintings of four hundred saints. There are more churches to see in Verona but we are now going to look at castles and palaces.

The Fourteenth Century Castelvecchio (Old Castle) was built on the banks of the Adige River near the Ponte Scaligero (Scaligero Bridge), probably on the site of a Roman fortress. Built to protect against foreign invaders and popular rebellions, it included a fortified bridge in case the owners had to flee north to join their allies in the Tyrol. Over the years the castle has known many renovations and restorations. Make sure to visit its art museum, specializing in Venetian painters and sculptors.

Those Scaligeris spent a lot of their time in the Palazzo degli Scaligeri, their medieval palace, which today, as then, is closed to the general public. But you can go next door to the Arche Scaligere with its Gothic tombs of selected members of the family.

The Italian Piazza is a meeting place. Verona has some special examples. The Piazza delle Erbe (Herb Square) has been around since the days of the Romans. For ages it was a fruit and vegetable market but now is geared to tourists. It still maintains its medieval look and some of the produce stalls. The Piazza dei Signori (Gentlemen’s Square) is Verona’s center of activities as it has been for centuries. This square is right next door to the Scaglieri Palace. Those gentlemen didn’t believe in commuting.
We can’t leave Verona without visiting those star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. The Twelfth Century Casi di Giulietta (Juliet’s House) long belonged to the Dal Cappello family and since it’s not a long way from Cappello to Capulet perhaps… This lovely house even possesses a courtyard balcony. Yes, the house at Via Cappello, 23 probably isn’t the real thing, but crowds come to gawk and dream. This could be the place to propose marriage.

What about food? Verona's cuisine features typical dishes of the Po Valley plains: mixed boiled meats, nervetti (calf’s foot and veal shank salad), and risotto, often prepared with a healthy douse of Amarone wine. The Piazza delle Erbe still has some fruit and vegetable stalls selling local produce such as radicchio and asparagus. Not only the wine is classified. Verona is home to a classified cheese, Monte Veronese. But who would think that rice is also classified? The Riso Nano Vialone Veronese is a laboratory-developed rice first introduced into the area in 1945. It now represents 90% of the local production. Is it better than other rice? Locals obviously think so. I promise that I will taste it on my next trip to Verona.

Let’s suggest a sample menu, one of many. Start with Gnocchi (Small Potato Dumplings). Then try Pastissada de Caval (Horsemeat Stew, often simmered in wine). For dessert indulge yourself with Pandoro di Verona (Verona Butter Cream Cake). Be sure to increase your dining pleasure by including local wines with your meal.

We’ll conclude with a quick look at Veneto wine. Veneto ranks 3rd among the 20 Italian regions for the area planted in grape vines and for its total annual wine production. About 45% of Veneto wine is red or rosé, leaving 55% for white. The region produces 24 DOC wines and 3 DOCG wines, Recioto di Soave, Soave Superiore, and Bardolino Superiore. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine The G in DOCG stands for Garantita, but there is in fact no guarantee that such wines are truly superior. Almost 30% of Venetian wine carries the DOC or DOCG designation.

Valpolicella DOC is a world famous wine produced north of Verona from several local red grapes. This wine is usually nothing to write home about and often tastes of cooked cherries. But that is hardly the end of the Valpolicella story. Valpolicella Ripasso is made from young Valpolicella wine put into tanks or barrels containing the lees (one could say dregs, but that might give the wrong impression) of a recioto wine (see below). The mixture undergoes a secondary fermentation and becomes a more interesting wine. Valpolicella Recioto is made from passito grapes, those dried on mats for several months. It may be a still wine, a fizzy wine, or a sparkling wine. Valpolicella Recioto is sweet or bittersweet. Amarone DOC is a type of Valpolicella Recioto whose sugar has been completely transformed into alcohol becoming a powerful tasting wine that packs a punch and ages well. What a difference between Amarone and its source wine, Valipolcella.

Levi Reiss has authored or co-authored ten books on computers and the Internet, but to be honest, he would rather just drink fine Italian, French, or other wine, accompanied by the right foods. He teaches classes in computers at an Ontario French-language community college. The city's early as well as present claim to fame lies in it's airport located on the south side of town.

Built in the early 1940's by the United States Army Air Force it served as a military training facility base, being used as well by (ATC), Air Transport Command to deliver US built aircraft to Britain. As soon as the war was over the US government gave the airport to the city of Venice.

The airport has 2, 5000 runways and is the base of FFTC (Florida Flight Training Center), that does pilot training as well as charter service within Florida and the surrounding states.

Triple Diamond is the main FBO and provides assistance to jet aircraft.

On September 12, 2001, national news and the FBI descended on Venice as it was discovered that three of the WTC 9/11 terrorists, Mohamed Atta, Marwan Al-Shehhi, and Ziad Jarrah, had all lived in Venice for the purpose of taking flight training lessons at the Venice Municipal Airport. The trio had all enrolled in Huffman Aviation.

Atta's time in Venice has been chronicled by Daniel Hopsicker in his book," Welcome to Terrorland."

Due to the beauty of the area, warm weather, and white sandy beaches ,many of the men and women who. were stationed in Venice during the war came back to make it their permanent home

Having been listed in many circles as the shark's tooth capital of the world , Venice holds an annual shark's tooth festival to commemorate the abundance of shark's teeth(some of which are known to be thousands of years old) that can be found in the area. Teeth can be found by walking the beach and sifting through the sand, although the best results are had by diving off shore. One can only hope to find the teeth without the shark attached. Just kidding, shark attacks are extremely rare, no shark attacks have been reported in Sarasota County in many,many years.

Probably the best area to find shark's teeth is south of town behind the airport at a beach known as Caspersen's Beach, although Sharkey's Beach is also popular, where shovels and scoops can be rented to find teeth anywhere from 1/4 in. to 3 inches and larger.

In the past, due to the near perfect weather and beautiful scenery, Venice has been the winter home for many organizations,including the Kentucky Military Institute as well as the Ringling Circus .

Be it for a short stay or a lifetime home, Venice calls.

Gary has traveled to many parts of the world, see more articles and photos at: http://www.travelnsnap.com
Gary has developed a line of novelty gifts featuring some of his photos taken around the world. http://www.tshirtsbumperstickers.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Gary_Wonning

Holidaying in Rome

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 86px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/SjUN20OccjI/AAAAAAAAAlA/bfMAcuGnhH0/s400/c3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347195367955657266" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 97px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/SjUN2rhRSdI/AAAAAAAAAk4/BMtKFE5Onn4/s400/c1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347195365618698706" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 100px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/SjUN2uuTtyI/AAAAAAAAAkw/M6hqI9ZL1cQ/s400/c4.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347195366478690082" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 132px; height: 110px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/SjUN2QgsPmI/AAAAAAAAAko/TFyWm8QHHQE/s400/c2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347195358368513634" />
What images spring to mind when you think of Rome? Perhaps it's the grandiose coliseums that played host to the bloody gladiator showcases of ancient times, or perhaps the vast palaces and other ancient Roman architecture that are dotted around the city.

Nowadays, these battles take a different form, and now top athletes do battle on the pitch and the court instead of the dusty arenas that attracted tens of thousands of spectators.

Indeed, for others the city plays host to spectacular sporting events - including the recent Champions League Final and matches from the Six Nations rugby tournament. And for sports fans, Rome can be a spectacular destination for experiencing both ancient Roman culture and sporting events.

The Stadio Olimpico, home of teams such as A.S. Roma and Lazio, is a popular destination for sporting enthusiasts, and hotels in Rome were recently packed with thousands of football fans as the stadium played host to the Champions League final.

Rome has a rich variety of attractions to suit all tastes - be they sporting or otherwise - there are many museums that showcase the rich history that has made the city recognisable around the world. So whether you're looking to explore a museum or the famous street markets, Rome remains one of the most popular city break destinations in Europe, with many taking advantage of cheap flights to Rome in order to explore the ancient city.

As well as a multitude of sights around the city, the tiny state of Vatican City lies within the city, and many flock to this part of the city to take in the sights and sounds of St Peter's Square and the spectacular architecture and artwork of the Sistine Chapel.

Flights to Rome are frequent from many UK and European airports, with many choosing to take advantage of budget airlines in order to take city breaks in the Italian capital. Indeed, short excursions - such as city breaks and romantic weekends - have become synonymous with the city, offering couples the opportunity to relax and take in the beauty of this ancient city.

Looking to holiday in this historic city and are looking for flights to Rome? Go online and search through a wide range of hotels in Rome and cheap flights to Rome to help find a deal to suit you and your holiday budget.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=David_Collins

London's Top Five Cocktail Bars

If there's one thing London isn't short of, it's a cocktail bar. They're everywhere and Martinis and Cosmopolitans are being mixed all over the city despite the credit crunch. Some are cheap, some are very expensive. Some of them are just right. Of course, it's not always easy to tell which ones are worth the money. This article looks at the Goldilocks of cocktail bars throughout the capital, without having to venture into a scary looking members club or swanky hotel bar.

1. But once you spy the sneaky stairs, you're treated to a gorgeous 30s bar and some excellent cocktails. The £7.50 Sebastian Martini wins points for being the most divine - passion fruit, vodka and champagne in that ever important martini glass. (Cocktails always taste better in a martini glass, don't you think?) Think flapper dresses and feathers and you've got the look just right.

2. It's a breakfast bar, a diner and cocktail bar all rolled into one. How very U S of A. Press a dinky little button at your table to order more champagne (very nice touch) or have one of the charming waitresses bring you a rhubarb gin and tonic. It's not cheap though. Drinks are around a tenner. It's worth it; you're paying for style here.

3. Yes please! Throw in some sushi and this is a fantastic little find in Clerkenwell. With favourites like Space Invaders and Pacman on the old school arcade machines, you'll have a great time getting in touch with your inner child. They play great music and do a mean Polish martini. I'm more of a fan of their long drinks, but if you really really want to, you can have yourself a Wasbabi Martini. It's a pricey night out though - most cocktails are £7-8.

4. The cocktail list is gigantic. You'd be very very hungover if you tried to work your way through it. It's not the cheapest cocktail bar - the drinks will set you back about £8 each, but the mixologists are some of the best in the business and if you can't decide what you want, you can always get them to whip up something new. Having your own signature cocktail is pretty cool y'know.

5. It's not just a bar with an immense cocktail menu, it's also an art gallery. There's always something interesting going on here. You'll meet some very cool types here as well. Artists, writers and philosophy students mostly. The cocktails are mostly novelty, but it's that's your thing then you'll really like this quirky little bar. Expect to pay around £6 for your tipple.

When looking for entertainment and new places, it is easy to find hundreds of fantastic bars, restaurants and London hotels in one of the most fun cities of the world.

Sian is a freelance journalist who specializes in writing about entertainment and events in London. It is really interesting because you take a virtual tour of the Big Apple! The Sky Ride is located on the Empire State Building's second floor and Kevin Bacon narrates the tour. This digital virtual tour is really cool because visitors can truly tour the entire city in much less time and with much less effort than doing so on foot or in a cab!

The Sky Ride uses flight simulation that allows visitors to literally "fly" over approximately 30 different sites in this great city. People can visit New York and see all the "must sees" without having to actually spend their entire vacation sightseeing. In addition to the Sky Ride there are also two other shows played. One is a seven-minute program that discusses the history of the Empire State Building. The other is a seven-minute presentation on the "Top 10 Things to do in New York."

This is a perfect stop for visitors to New York who want to tour the Empire State Building and would like to see some of the other hotspots in New York without necessarily having to tour them all!

The New York Skyride is open from 8 am until 10 pm every day of the year. There is a shorter schedule for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. The entire Skyride presentation takes about a half an hour so visitors can easily budget their time to include this show. Tickets are for sale at the New York Skyride Box Office or may be purchased online at a discount.

Combo tickets for the Empire State Building Observatory and the New York Skyride are available for purchase. It is recommended to view the New York Skyride show first so when you reach the Observatory you will recognize the city and the landmarks you are seeing!

There is a website that has great information on USA Vacations and Unique Travel Spots Listed State By State and Season, the website is called: Seasonal Vacation Spots, and can be found at this url:

http://www.seasonalvacationspots.com

By Robert W. The culinary fare in Paris has a reputation to match any of its famous landmarks. And what is more, you do not have to necessarily spend a fortune in a fancy restaurant to appease your palate.

Small restaurants will entice you with their fare of croissants, tarts, éclairs, and elaborate cakes. Even a humble sandwich gets dressed up in Paris as it is made with crusty baguette and fine cheeses.

Modest restaurants located around the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Elysées boast of authentic local cuisine. Gourmet dining at reasonable prices ensures a steady stream of both Parisians and tourists to these restaurants.

Experienced tourists recommend restaurants that are located in residential areas in Paris. These, they swear are authentic quality French food at competitive prices.

Dining in Paris is termed as an experience to be savored not something you do to appease hunger pangs. Classy restaurants with extensive courses and winning wine lists are bound to give you value for money. You might have trouble understanding the menu leave alone pronouncing it. If this happens ask for help unabashedly. Only then will you be able to relate to Salade de Gesiers as salad with sautéed chicken gizzards, or Ris de Veau as veal sweetbreads, or Langue de Boeuf as beef tongue. A proper meal in a Paris restaurant should be had in the right sequence -an appetizer, an entree, a main course and dessert along with suitable wine, and coffee as the grand finale.

Etiquette is something that seems inborn in the French and tourists would be wise to at least pretend at being good mannered in classy restaurants. If you do not want to stick out like a sore thumb, that is. Formal dressing, soft voices, no clinking noises from your table, extreme courtesy to the serving staff, etc., are a few basic behavior patterns expected at any fine Paris restaurant.

Le Vieux Bistro, Mon Vieil Ami, Le Petit Marche, L'Ardoise, J'Go and Café Moderne are a few Paris restaurants that are worth a visit.

Paris provides detailed information on Paris, Paris Hotels, Discount Flights Paris, Paris Accommodations and more. There's no doubt that Phuket has a diverse range of places to eat. From the most basic of street food right through to the most lavish of eateries, Phuket has a lot to offer even the most discerning of foodies.

Thailand is famous for its street food and though you won't find the same kind of choice as you can in Bangkok, Phuket still has street food in abundance. You could spend days arguing about which street vendor does the best noodles or kao man gai, but ultimately, half the fun off eating off the street is in trying a variety of places and seeing which ones are best.

As a general rule of thumb for street food in Phuket, if you pass a place that is absolutely heaving, you can rest assured that that is one place worth eating at. The locals all have their favorite restaurants and they will eat at them regularly, often every day. Many street vendors at least have some pictures of food on their carts for people who can't read Thai, so if you aren't sure what or how to order, just point. If all else fails, point at someone else's dish and see what you end up with.

There are plenty of interesting restaurants in Phuket. One of the best is Natural Restaurant in Phuket Town. The place looks as if it's alive, with knick knacks everywhere. Walking through the restaurant is like climbing a tree house. Natural Restaurant is one of the best places in Phuket to sample the delights of Thai food.

One of Patong's most popular restaurants is Coyote on the beach road. This restaurant serves up some of the best Mexican grub on the island. It's a little pricey compared to eating local food, but for a special occasion it's worth splashing out for.

There is some debate as to which restaurant does the best pizza in Phuket. There is a lot of choice, but one that stands out from the crowd is Toto's near the Laguna entrance in Cherng Talay. There's something about the sauce that keeps people coming back for more.

For something lavish, the restaurant at Indigo Pearl resort in Nai Yang does the best Sunday brunch on the island with an unrivalled selection of food to choose from. Although it's pricey, it's definitely worth a visit to sample some fine cuisine.

Whatever your favorite food, you'll be bound to find it in Phuket, but there's no harm in being adventurous and trying out some of the many types of fare from around the world that the island has to offer.

For all the latest information about where to eat in Phuket, including reviews and views on eateries in Patong, Kata-Karon and Phuket Town, visit the website Phuket Vogue.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Matt_Crook

Phuket Nightlife Still Changing

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 86px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si-18yW6n9I/AAAAAAAAAO0/csxd6tTLEGI/s400/ph4.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345691338626736082" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 126px; height: 90px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si-18o_wm-I/AAAAAAAAAOs/Czh0YdeJOS8/s400/ph3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345691336113691618" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 124px; height: 76px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si-18R2KY4I/AAAAAAAAAOk/-nKWA4srFds/s400/ph2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345691329899422594" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 131px; height: 87px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si-18L1zFTI/AAAAAAAAAOc/7uVAGNcsvw4/s400/ph1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345691328287282482" />
Phuket nightlife takes on many different forms. Phuket is one of Thailand's top destinations and as such there is a diverse range of nightspots on the island. Although Phuket nightlife is not quite on the same level as in Bangkok, that doesn't mean that you won't be able to find somewhere to have fun.

Phuket nightlife is at its most lively in Patong. You'll either love Patong or you'll hate it. The bars are loud, the clubs are obnoxious and the streets are crowded. That being said, Patong is cheap and the bars and clubs stay open later than in other parts of Phuket.

Patong is famous for its nightlife. The center of the action is found on Soi Bangla, which is a hive of go-go bars, discos and stage shows. This is Phuket nightlife at its most seedy, but it can be a lot of fun if you go in the right frame of mind.

Generally speaking, the bars and clubs in Patong churn out hip hop and dance music hits. It can all be a bit predictable so don't go expecting something special.

Patong is also known for its girls. Yes, it's true, there are countless bar girls and sex shows in Patong, but the people of Patong make no effort to conceal these facts. Patong is what it is and it's best not to take the whole place too seriously.

Perhaps the most fun that can be had in Thailand is at some of the local clubs. Phuket nightlife is at its most authentic in the small Thai clubs, where you can check out some of the local bands. Phuket Town is probably the best place to sample some Thai-style clubbing.

Also in Phuket Town there are lots of pubs and beer bars and much less of the seedy side of Phuket nightlife.

There are plenty of other areas where you can go and party, but usually they aren't as busy and entertaining as in Patong or Phuket Town. There are a few exceptions scattered around the island in places such as Surin, Kata-Karon and Nai Harn.

The only area that Phuket really lacks anything in in terms of nightlife is serious clubbing. There are a few Phuket clubs where you can hear cutting-edge music, but these are few and far between. However, it is possible to catch electro, techno, breaks, house and more in some Phuket clubs and bars.

Phuket could be a major clubbing destination in Southeast Asia, but the island has a long way to go before it can start competing with the likes of Singapore and KL.

For now, Phuket nightlife has enough depth to keep people entertained, but you feel as if there is more to come. The shining beacon of Phuket nightlife is that there is a great live-music scene around the island. There are lots of bands who can rattle out everything from rock and indie to jazz and blues. If you can get into it, there is a top indie scene in Phuket. Pick up some CDs in a local store to get a feel for the music.

The author of this article covers Phuket nightlife and more at Phuket Vogue

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Matt_Crook

10 Top Budget Travel Tips For Tokyo and Japan

Tokyo on a Budget

You're coming to Tokyo but you don't want to spend an excessive amount of money. Follow these tips to help you keep within your budget and have a great vacation!
1. Trains - Rail fares on local trains are not expensive in Japan. My train route to work costs me 250 yen. This is just over 1 British pound or 2 US dollars. The same distance in the UK on London transport would cost me around 5 pounds. When you get here use the local train system as much as you can to reduce your travel costs.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 135px; height: 83px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5bBiABr9I/AAAAAAAAAIw/6wHxroXfGD0/s400/train3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345309889600270290" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 113px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5bBTfwxbI/AAAAAAAAAIo/FgQB428dH0A/s400/train2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345309885706847666" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 85px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5bA1TyvuI/AAAAAAAAAIg/XJLQBWeh43U/s400/train1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345309877603581666" />

2. Rail Pass - Planning on traveling across country from Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka or other major destinations? Consider buying a Rail Pass. Note that the Pass can only be bought from your home country before landing in Japan. The great advantage of a Rail Pass is that it can be used on the shinkansen/bullet train along with all other JR lines including local. Pay one price and have access to unlimited travel for 1, 2 or 3 weeks.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 104px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5bqWoeBDI/AAAAAAAAAJI/_KpFZg0T-e4/s400/rail3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345310590923310130" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 133px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5bqC0iTyI/AAAAAAAAAJA/XlMx7eLrc18/s400/rail2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345310585605213986" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 106px; height: 130px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5bppZLbcI/AAAAAAAAAI4/4bYMJUkswvg/s400/rail1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345310578779581890" />

3. 100 Yen Stores - The 100 yen store is the equivalent of a dollar or pound store. You can buy a multitude of items here. Pick up your souvenir gifts and also stock up on any treats such as crisps
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 137px; height: 91px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5cMLGRbgI/AAAAAAAAAJg/D-bmL-PaXQw/s400/100y3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345311171942641154" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 137px; height: 106px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5cMMSC4hI/AAAAAAAAAJY/5U-_HDgVcKQ/s400/100y2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345311172260454930" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 135px; height: 77px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5cL4iec2I/AAAAAAAAAJQ/voW6iDJ8UVE/s400/100y1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345311166960661346" />

4. Izekayas - If you want a good night out without spending a fortune, an izekaya is the best and most entertaining way to go. On top of that you'll get a taste of real Japanese culture in action and see the locals really let their hair down as they socialize outside the rigidity of their normal business lives.

5. Capsule Hotel - Capsule hotels are a great way to save money - particularly if you're a guy. Why guys? Many hotels are still men only, although there are some that now allow women too. Average cost in Tokyo is around 3,000 to 5,000 yen per night. This is approximately 15 - 25 pounds or 28 - 47 US dollars.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 96px; height: 72px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5c6n7IRbI/AAAAAAAAAJw/uosnyre7qow/s400/iz2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345311969954514354" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 103px; height: 137px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5c6ba3IpI/AAAAAAAAAJo/s7RMW3JHfPc/s400/iz1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345311966597948050" />

6. Business Hotel - Some hotels are known as business hotels as they do not have the same luxury of space as some of the bigger chains. If you don't fancy staying in a capsule hotel you should consider the business hotel alternative. Prices usually start from around 7,000 yen and go to 15,000 yen per night.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 124px; height: 131px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5djX6HWxI/AAAAAAAAAKI/7c7Wlr-C-vs/s400/bu2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345312670029929234" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 92px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5djKMaDFI/AAAAAAAAAKA/ADfPoOFd8bY/s400/bu1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345312666348555346" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 146px; height: 97px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5djOURA5I/AAAAAAAAAJ4/APmrITzgafM/s400/bu3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345312667455259538" />

7. Museums - It's worth including some museums on your itinerary as they are not expensive in Japan compared to many other countries. Some are even free! Choose from science, history, art or technology museums and more.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 126px; height: 83px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5eW5dZbnI/AAAAAAAAAK4/Dwk3kPK5TV4/s400/mu2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345313555209612914" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 135px; height: 98px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5eW3mkNzI/AAAAAAAAAKw/yaL4UexFgxU/s400/mu1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345313554711197490" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 167px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5fGHja0bI/AAAAAAAAALI/lSg8ZyIjgZA/s200/mu3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345314366446817714" />

8. Kaiten-Zushi - Sit at a revolving conveyor belt and eat to your hearts content. Located in Shibuya and Shinjuku, this large park has an extravagant garden. During the Edo period, this park, was once the residence of the very wealthy Naito family. Eventually the Imperial Household Agency of Japan took it over and changed the residence to a park. Currently the National Ministry of the Environment has jurisdiction of the beautiful park.

The national garden park was home to some imperial gardens. These gardens were only accessible by royalty and were completed in 1906. These gardens unfortunately were lost and destroyed in 1945. They were destroy during World War II.

The Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden gardens are fifty-eight hectares and have a circumference of there and a half kilometres. Within the gardens they blend distinct garden styles. There are clear influences from English Landscaping, Japanese Traditional, and French Formal. With more then twenty thousand trees and fifteen hundred cherry trees, the park offers some very amazing photo opportunities. The cherry trees bloom in late March on through April. These are the best times to take photos with the blend of greens, oranges, reds, and pinks. Some other trees found in the park are: plane trees, cypress trees, tulip trees, and the majestic Himalayan Cedars.

The sheer contrast of the garden versus the hustle and bustle and busy-ness of Tokyo is a great experience. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden offers a nice quiet alternative for you to relax during your Tokyo trip.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 118px; height: 89px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5Y8jocrSI/AAAAAAAAAIY/2O_MwBhtFcM/s400/images2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345307605115645218" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 98px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5Y8V14GOI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/JlRp60_5Neo/s400/images3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345307601413871842" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 124px; height: 93px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5Y8eERiVI/AAAAAAAAAII/SF1qcYrCzDY/s400/images4.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345307603621742930" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 131px; height: 98px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5Y8PhhOUI/AAAAAAAAAIA/0JrLVhhvO08/s400/images5.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345307599717873986" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 78px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uY_T58g1Nls/Si5Y8Nr8NjI/AAAAAAAAAH4/T5Zyrtp0v5I/s400/images1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345307599224714802" />

For more information about Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden visit http://www.guidedtourtokyo.com/shinjuku.html

For more information about Tokyo, Japan visit http://www.guidedtourtokyo.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Harry_Preston

The Differences Between American, British, and Australian English

Australia, Great Britain, and America all speak the same language, but you simply have to visit each country to realize that, while they all speak English, it is far from a universal language. The English spoken in Great Britain, America, and Australia has many similarities, but a surprising number of differences as well. The main reason for this is the vast distance between each country. Here are some of the common differences you will find between these three versions of English.

Pronunciation Differences

Pronunciation between the three types of English is very dissimilar. In American English the "r" at the end of the word almost always affects its pronunciation, whereas in Australian and British English the "r" is often silent. Also, the emphasis placed on the syllables of the word varies from British, Australian, and American English. In Britain, the world adult has the emphasis on the first syllable, whereas in America it is placed on the second half of the word. Australian English is unique in the fact that many words have sounds that are eliminated. Instead of saying good day, the Australian speaker says g'day. The main pronunciation difference between the three, however, is the pronunciation of the vowel sounds.

Differences in Spelling

Not only do the three types of English sound different, but they are also spelled differently. In some ways, the spelling reflects the difference in pronunciation. For instance, Americans use the world airplane to refer to a flying mode of transportation. In Great Britain, the word is aeroplane, and it is pronounced with an audible "o" sound. Another common difference in spelling is aluminium, which is the UK spelling, and aluminum, the US spelling. Again, the difference shows the difference in pronunciation of the two words. In this instance the Australian spelling is the same as the UK spelling.

Another common spelling difference between UK English and American English is the use of -our verses -or at the end of the word. For instance, in the UK, colour, flavour, honour, and similar words all end in -our, whereas in America they are spelled with the -or ending (color, flavor, honor). In Australia, the -our spelling is almost universal.

Similarly, the endings -re and -re are different between the different English dialects. In America you will go to the theater or fitness center, whereas in Britain you will visit the theatre or fitness centre. Again, Australian English follows the British pattern.

There are other common spelling differences as well. For instance, in American English, words that sound as though they end with an -ize will always end in an -ize. However, in UK English, they typically end in ise (i.e. realize, realise). Also, British English often doubles consonants when adding a suffix when American English does not, such as in the world traveller.

Interestingly, the three languages also have distinct vocabularies. For instance, the "hood" of a car is called the "bonnet" in Australia and Britain. Australia has several terms that are not used in either of the other countries, such as "bloke" (man) and "arvo" (afternoon). Also, Australians use some phrases that are combinations of British and American terms, such as "rubbish truck." Rubbish is commonly used in the UK, and truck is commonly used in America.

Grammar Distinctions

Besides spelling and pronunciation differences, British, American, and Australian English all have some subtle grammar differences as well. For instance, in Great Britain, it is perfectly acceptable to use a collective noun (such as army) as a plural word ("the army are coming"), whereas in America collective nouns are almost always singular ("the army is coming"). British English also uses the irregular form of the past participle of several verbs (learnt rather than learned). Also, British English tends to drop the definite article in some situations. For instance, British English speakers may refer to being "in hospital" instead of "in the hospital." Australian English grammar tends to follow British rules.

Learning English online online has never been so comfortable and easy. You can use English Dictionary Software to help improve your online English learning.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Amy_Nutt

Street Food in Thailand... A Smorgasbord For All The Senses

Like other Southeast Asian countries, food stalls are everywhere in the streets, markets and festivals of Thailand, providing an endless smorgasbord of aromas, color, sounds and flavors - food in Thailand is a feast for all of the senses.

Picture a barbecue hotdog stand outside a North American sports stadium. Now, instead of hotdogs and buns sizzling on a grill, the food cart is laden with fresh bananas, which are slathered in batter and deep-fried to golden in a giant wok, then scooped into a paper bag like a super-size order of extra thick homecut french fries. That was my first breakfast in Thailand while I watched hundreds of beautifully costumed elephants play soccer and tug-of-war in an annual Elephant Round-up in Surin, in the far northeast of the country!

The next 'hotdog stand' does have a grill, placed over a large bin of charcoal, with flattened chicken quarters sizzling on sticks that you eat like a popsicle; next door to that is yet another steel cart heaped with fresh, ripe pineapple, mango and papaya, and sporting a huge mortar and pestle for transforming the greener papayas into a crunchy, sweet-sour-spicy salad with morsels of shrimp or squid, chiles, garlic and sugar.

What makes Thai food so delicious and distinctive among other Southeast Asian food is this unique blending of fresh herbs, spices and other ingredients that combine for a perfect balance of sweet, sour, salt and heat that leaves your mouth feeling clean and your tastebuds popping in the afterglow.

Fresh fruit, salads and even soups and noodles are ladled into plastic bags with a skewer, fork, spoon or straw for eating on the go or perched on a folding chair at a nearby metal card table in the market.

Thai buses and trains become moving picnic grounds, with everyone chatting, eating and sharing the fare hawked through the vehicles' windows at roadside stops and terminals: Gai Yang, the flattened barbecue chicken on a stick, skewered meat and fish balls and sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves.

Carnivals and markets feature huge woks at knee-height, bubbling with deep-fried critters of all sorts, many unidentifiable. Are they grasshoppers? crickets? spiders? baby birds? small frogs? -- my mouth and eyes were constantly wide open in wonder and amazement!

I spent an inordinate amount of time in the fresh produce and night food markets -- exuberantly fascinated and often visibly discombobulated, to the great amusement of the vendors and shoppers.

After traveling every aisle of food carts and woks on my mission to find the freshest, most interesting and tasty-looking dishes, I was often met with earnestly shaking heads or "No, you don't want that - that's Thai food!" by English speaking cooks or bystanders when I pointed and gestured and tried to ask for a meal I knew I truly wanted. On my first such adventure, I did not know that the custom was for the cook to show the ladle with the amount of the garlic and chili for you to indicate how much you wanted: thinking she was simply asking if I wanted those Thai ingredients, I nodded vigorously at the heaped display, and in it all went! Yes, it was Thai food, and I enjoyed every sizzling touch to my lips under the watchful, laughing eyes of the vendors and bystanders who had gathered.

I spent as much time learning about, admiring and experiencing the food as I did with major tourist attractions, often spending hours strolling through streets and markets taking in the sights and smells and sounds: quiet clucking rising up from a heap of vibrantly coloured roosters or chickens tied together at the feet - a Thai rooster's plumage is extraordinarily beautiful; plastic tubs and buckets just full enough of murky grey water to keep the fish, frogs or turtles alive until a sale was clinched; mounds and mounds of green and red, and purple and orange; the pleasant stench of durian and jackfruit - pleasant because I was just so thrilled and in awe of it all!

I tried deep-fried grasshoppers at a carnival in Kanchanaburi during a sound and light show of "The Bridge On The River Kwai" that ended with a fabulous fireworks display recreating the Allied bombing campaign that destroyed the bridges of the Death Railway in 1945. I tried a few tiny roasted wood worms offered by a very thin host in a northern hill-tribe village near the Myanmar border, and feared that I was eating his family out of house and home. I discovered countless traditional dishes I had never tasted and savoured authentic versions of some I had had in Toronto's newly arrived Thai restaurants. As often as I could, I watched their creation so that I could try to replicate them when I got home and got a kitchen again.

Many people are alarmed at how daring I was with my stomach. During two years of round-the-world travel, including six months in Southeast Asia, I only had one tiny bout of queasiness over a couple of days on Sumatra in Indonesia. In fact, I had never eaten so well or felt so healthy in my life. I must have found the perfect balance of common sense and adventure, or, some might argue, I was just lucky.

I don't recommend trying everything, and I do recommend a few common sense tips for sampling the full range of the food on offer throughout your travels:

at street and market stalls, do watch the cooking for awhile to ensure that the ingredients are fresh and the food is being cooked thoroughly; if you have any doubts, move on to the next vendor

choose vendors that have a good steady flow of customers - not only is the food probably very good, but the turnover means fresher food

ask your guesthouse host and any other residents you meet for their favourite places to eat, and for recommendations on dishes to order

follow the other safe eating tips you find in travel guides, like recommendations about water, ice cubes, and peeling fruit and vegetables

Of course, you will find an endless selection of sit-down restaurants where you can savour some of the more familiar Thai dishes now found in restaurants around the world: green curry with chicken, red curry with beef, pad Thai and other noodle dishes, and wonderfully aromatic sweet basil dishes.

Whether you plan to sample the fabulous foods from the street vendors and markets or stick to what you know, learn a few tips on deciphering a menu or asking for a type of dish with a few Thai Food Terms.

Many supermarkets are now carrying a range of prepared sauces, curries and other Asian products, but if you enjoy adventure and creativity in your own kitchen, many Thai recipes are fairly easy to create once you've mastered a few essentials. Gai Yang, after all, is really just barbequed chicken with a Thai twist! A good food reference guide or cookbook with a glossary of Asian ingredients will help you gain that perfect balance of sour, sweet, salt and heat that is unique to Thai cuisine.

© 2005 recipe-for-travel.com

Carolyn Nantais is a freelance writer, website copywriter, world traveler and culinary xenophile who indulges in temporary retirement from time to time to travel and eat around the world.
